The following resources may be useful for clinicians when it comes to shared decision making.

 

Communicating potential harms and benefits
Perioperative version. The Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication at the University of Cambridge course, accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

This course is designed for surgeons, anaesthetists and other perioperative specialists to help them develop skills to communicate effectively with patients about the potential harms and benefits of treatment options.

Primary care version. The Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication at the University of Cambridge course, accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners.

This course is designed for health practitioners in primary care to help them develop skills for communicating effectively with patients about the potential harms and benefits of treatment options.

 

The Centre also has online video resources of patient and clinician interactions around shared decision making.

 

e-Learning for Healthcare runs a shared decision making course which has been developed with the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication at the University of Cambridge

It is aimed at healthcare professionals, health improvement personnel and patient engagement representatives to inform and educate them on Shared Decision Making in order to embed it in day to day clinical practice.

Two new courses Communicating Risk – Primary Care and Perioperative Medicine – have been added to the programme alongside the existing courses – Guidance on Shared Decision Making, Dialogues in Shared Decision Making and Talking about What Matters.
